Imagine this...
As a physician you grab the chart off the wall and you get a computer tablet. On it you see the information about your next patient - ALL the information. You enter the room and greet the patient with a knowledgeable look on your face.
As the patient explains the concern for the visit you select a couple of items from the electronic pad. You examine the patient and determine a diagnosis. As you explain your finding to the patient, you select a couple of drop-down menus on the pad. The pad quietly reminds you that you should check the thyroid and then the exam would be a level higher and more importantly, more complete. As you send the patient on their way you instruct them to pick up a prescription you just ordered at the pharmacy across the street and also make sure they pick up discharge instructions at the front desk and follow them closely.
What has just happened?
The exam SOAP notes have been created. The billing level has been established and sent to the billing office to be automatically processed to the proper insurance company. You have faxed a prescription over to the pharmacy with your signature and could have even ordered labs, written a referral letter AND had all that available when the patient calls back 10 minutes later to your nurse because she forgot one of you instructions?
This is the world we live in today. LET US SHOW YOU HOW.
